At a reception in Arlington, VA, Senator Barbara Mikulski was announced as the 2015 Friend of America’s Service Commissions. The award recognizes a leader for their outstanding contributions to the field of national service and volunteering and its positive impact on the work of state service commissions.
Known to many as the “godmother of national service”, Mikulski worked with Senator Kennedy in 1993 to frame and pass the National and Community Service Trust Act, creating the Corporation for National and Community Service, AmeriCorps, and state service commissions. In 2009, she worked alongside Senators Hatch and Kennedy to pass the bipartisan Serve America Act.
“We’re pleased to present Senator Mikulski with the Friend of America’s Service Commission Award, our highest honor, ” said Kaira Esgate, CEO of America’s Service Commissions. “Senator Mikulski is one of our strongest champions, pushing for more opportunities to serve and growing national service resources including those for state service commissions.”
