2014 Innovation & Leadership Awards – Commissioner Finalists
Shelly Pfaff, South Dakota
For 20 years, Ms. Pfaff has served as Executive Director of the South Dakota Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities. She holds a Masters of Education and a Bachelor of Science, both from South Dakota State University. She is a Nationally Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and has received the Governor’s Distinguished Service Award, the National Council on Independent Living Region VII Advocacy Award, and the “Hero in the Fight” Award for efforts on behalf of people with mental/neuro-biological disabilities. Shelly holds several statewide appointments, included among them is her role as a commissioner since the inception of the SD State Service Commission. She was instrumental in raising matching resources to ensure continued commission operations. Shelly now participates as chair of the Governance Committee for Serve South Dakota. The Committee has been very active in building a nonprofit organization in order to maintain commission operations.
Susan Towler, Volunteer Florida
Susan Towler is the vice president of the Florida Blue Foundation and executive director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Florida Blue. She has been a very involved member of the Commission for over nine years and is the immediate past chair of the Commission. She served as chair of the Commission for two years and as vice chair prior to that. Susan is actively involved in the philanthropic sector. She is a member of the Council of Foundations, the Southeastern Council of Foundations, the Donors Forum of Northeast Florida and the Florida Philanthropic Network. She is currently a board member of the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida. She is a member of Leadership Florida and served as their chair in 2012-2013. Susan has been a true champion of Volunteer Florida.
